As part of Open House London Roddy Langmuir and David Cawston hosted an online tour of the Hillside Hub. Via the internet, 'visitors' were able to 'walk' around the building and post questions and comments using virtual 'sticky notes' for the architects to respond to. The Hub can still be accessed online and we will endeavour to answer any questions you leave.
In July the Stonebridge Estate held a celebration to mark the 15th anniversary since the regeneration of the area began. The Hillside Hub represents a major milestone in the regeneration programme and provides mixed-tenure apartments, a community centre, a health centre, a convenience store, a communal garden and parking in one development.
We have won a limited competition to design 122 new dwellings for Hyde Housing in Stonebridge, north west London, adjacent the Hillside Hub. The housing is a mix of open market rent and innovative dwellings designed specifically for independent older people. We are now working with Hyde to draw up the scheme towards a planning application in the first half of 2012.
Through the night of September 16th, and some of the morning of the 17th, a team from Cullinans walked 20 miles around London for Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres. The North East Maggie's Centre, designed by Ted Cullinan, is due to go on site this Winter. All donations to Maggie's via the Night Hike Team are still welcome!
Recent videos added to our website include an animation of how the BFI Master Film Store works and was put together, an animation of our Istanbul Mixed-use Theme Park Masterplan, which was runner-up in a recent competition and one of a series of short videos by Wood for Good in which Roddy Langmuir talks about the John Hope Gateway.
We have been working with Global Generation on ideas for their Skip Gardens in Kings Cross.
A sustainable architecture workshop for 15 Generators was held at our offices in October, during which time we made a small presentation on the essence of sustainable architecture using the designs for our new studios as a case study. Following the talk, the Generators split into 3 groups to carry out a brainstorm design session to create ideas for the entrance piece to the Skip Garden.
Over the past three months we have completed the BFI's Master Film Store that will preserve the nation's history of film for future generations; the final phase of the extensive remodelling of Forest Gate Community School in east London; structural engineering on a private house basement conversion in south London; and the sensitive refurbishment of four classrooms at Rosendale Primary School in south London. "We were astonished at the results they produced in the time given... We feel that their input is helping to make the school a better learning space for children and adults alike." Kate Atkins, Head of Rosendale Primary School.
To celebrate the start of works on our new studios we hosted a table-tennis tournament against the contractors, Jerram Falkus, in the soon-to-be-transformed building. We lost, but graciously. Other projects that have recently started on site inlcude; the Institute of Product and Service Innovation, our third building for the University of Warwick; and the Penarth Heights development near Cardiff Bay in Wales.
We collaborated with Jane Wernick Associates for the RIBA competition to design a pylon that would be capable of creating energy at the same time as distributing it. The PYLON+ design was not shortlisted, but we believe it would transform the grid and, if rolled out across the country, would get close to meeting the Government's micro-generation energy target of 2% by 2030 on its own. The PYLON+ could be used for local electricity generation by incorporating up to 8 vertical axis wind turbines.
Since the summer, Robin Nicholson has given a series of lectures in Chile (above) and took part in a debate on delivering the 'Green Agenda' at the London Design Festival; Roddy Langmuir spoke at the RIBA Symposium on working abroad, gave a talk and hosted a design charette for a group of students from Idaho University and chaired a debate at In Touch With Timber; Ted Cullinan gave a lecture to the RIBA NE in Newcastle and delivered the keynote speech at the LoveLight event; Philip Graham gave a high profile lecture at Goodenough College on our work in libya; and Carol Costello was a speaker at the annual Employee Ownership Association Conference. Coming up...

To celebrate the North East Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre going on site this summer, and to continue our support to the charity, a team from Cullinans will be walking 20 miles around London again. All donations will be very gratefully received.
A group from Cullinans visited Lambeth Community Care Centre in South London on its annual garden open day in May. Robin Nicholson, senior partner at Cullinans and the project architect of the Care Centre, took us on a tour of the building and explained how its extensive gardens have matured since its completion in 1985. The centre is based around an innovative approach to patient care, where patients have an active role in their own care and running of the centre.
As parent volunteers, Carol Costello and Kristina Roszynski undertook a study of Rosendale Primary School’s existing buildings. A London Board School, the building has many familiar environmental issues such as heat gain, heat loss and poor daylighting, due to later additions to the Victorian classroom and poor utilisation of space. Cullinans have since been appointed to help the school carry out works to four classrooms over the summer holidays. Our proposal will reduce summer heat gain and increase natural daylight. Natural ventilation is maximised in the design whilst the new adaptable classroom layouts with natural materials will provide a child centered learning space for the 21st century.
In May, Bristol City Council's planning committee voted unanimously to approve the last major residential building and Millennium Promenade leading down to the floating harbour (picture above) in our Bristol Harbourside Masterplan. The project will go on site later this year. Projects progressing on site at the moment include a new state-of-the-art Master Film Store for the British Film Institute, due for completion later this year, and Shenley Academy in Birmingham, due for completion in 2012. In August, the North East Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre (pictured above), designed by Ted Cullinan, will be going on site and the designs for our new low carbon, low energy studios in Baldwin Terrace will begin to be realised.
In June we were runners-up in an international competition to design a multi-purpose masterplan to regenerate 150 Ha of land in west Istanbul (pictured above), incorporating housing, offices, retail and a theme park. We were also invited to take part in an international competition to remodel the Central European University Campus in the heart of Budapest in Hungary.
At the Building Centre, Robin Nicholson gave the annual Building Centre Trust Annual Lecture and contributed to the first of the 'Energy Conversations' series, and Roddy Langmuir talked about the John Hope Gateway at the Wood Awards Launch. This year we have been hosting a series of lively talks on current thinking in sustainable practice. Sustainability Consultant and Architect, Ann Bodkin, will give the next talk 'Learning from Malmo and Frieburg' on 14th October.
On behalf of Cullinan's, Project Architect Laura Marr contributed to a Partnerships for Schools study looking at preventing over-heating in existing schools due to climate change. Senior Practice partner, Robin Nicholson, chaired the Zero Carbon (Schools) Task Force whose report was accepted by the Government earlier this year. Robin is now chair of the Cambridgeshire Quality Panel.
During the London Festival of Architecture, the Architecture Club organised a comprehensive exhibition at the Mall Galleries that celebrated the last 5 decades of London Architecture.
