PROJECT: Rosendale Primary School Classroom Improvements

LOCATION: South London

DATE: 2011

This project was initiated by two of our architects whose children attend the school.

The classrooms suffered from poor layout, inadequate storage, visual clutter and discomforting conditions in hot and cold weather. Following some informal advice to the head teacher, we were commissioned to design and oversee the building work to refurbish four of the existing Victorian classrooms. We took a sensitive approach which used the limited budget available to maximum effect.

To tackle the overheating problems, we designed an external pergola to provide solar shading, with a new heating system to keep the classrooms comfortable in winter. High performance roof lights have been installed to increase each classroom's natural daylight level, reducing the need for artificial lighting. We also created discrete additional storage space and a children's reading corner in each room.
