PROJECT: Tuckshops, Brampton Manor School

This magic box is a new tuck shop for Brampton Manor School in the London Borough of Newham.

The school needed a way of selling refreshments to pupils at break times. We brainstormed ideas with school staff to create a compact stand-alone structure that could be located anywhere on the playground. This flexibility, together with the shop's cheerful stripey cladding, makes a distinctive meeting place for pupils.

We designed the tuck shop with simple, robust materials - the blue cladding sits above a brick base to withstand kicks and knocks. The piston-operated serving hatch glides open to reveal the serving counter and create a canopy to shelter waiting customers. The floor internally is slightly raised above the external playground level to give a more commanding position for the staff.
